Preheat over to 325 degrees.
Whisk together these dry ingredients:
4 c all-purpose flour
1/2 t salt
2 1/4 t baking soda
2 t ginger
1 1/4 t cloves
1 1/4 t cinnamon
Cream together:
1 stick (1/2 c) softened unsalted butter
1/2 c shortning
Add and beat until light and fluffy:
3 c sugar
Add:
1/2 c dark molasses
Beat in:
2 eggs
Gradually mix in the flour mixture.
Put 1/2 c sugar in a bowl. Form 2" balls, roll in sugar. Place on a baking sheet 4" apart and flatten slightly with the bottom of a glass dipped in sugar.
Bake 15-16 min or until puffed and golden on the bottom, still soft. Don't overcook or they will be hard.
